THOUSANDS of families enjoyed dance, music, sport, food and fun fair rides at yesterday's Under One Sky community festival.

The event, held at Byron Recreation Ground in Christchurch Avenue, Wealdstone, for the first time, was busy, not least because it was the hottest day of the year.

Hundreds of children performed with their dance schools at the Dance Village stage, which was constantly popular, or took part in the schools' parade.

Visitors were able to browse stalls from community stalls, ride fun fair rides, play and try sports, watch performing from the main music stage, and, of course, buy an ice cream.

The police said there was no trouble and no arrests, and that the turnout was an estimated 4,000 although anecdotal evidence from others suggested the numbers may well top the 9,000 seen two years ago.

The festival was back after being cancelled last year due to the concerns about trying to police it at the same time as The Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Games.
