TWO men were arrested during 'beds in sheds' raids in Hayes, with Immigration Minister Mark Harper tagging along.

Hillingdon Council's Beds in Sheds Taskforce joined officers from the Home Office Immigration Enforcement on early morning raids at two addresses in Blyth Road last Wednesday, July 3.

An Indian male who had overstayed his work visa, and a failed asylum seeker who had absconded were apprehended.

Another operation in Southall led to the arrest of five Pakistani nationals for 'overstaying' offences.

Mr Harper accompanied officers to launch a government consultation on proposals that will make it harder for 'rogue' landlords to let property to illegal immigrants, and require all private landlords to check the immigration status of new tenants or face a fine.

The consultation, running in tandem with another on immigrants' contribution to healthcare, runs until August, and people are invited to respond by visiting www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk .
