SUNSHINE spread through the streets as hundreds flocked to the annual St George’s Day celebrations and wheelbarrow race.

Hundreds turned up for Pinner’s event on Sunday , organised by Pinner Rotary Club and Harrow Council, and enjoyed a hog roast, face painting, music from local bands, morris dancers, and the traditional wheelbarrow race – which has been held for 50 years.

Greg Townsend, 48, of Whittington Way, Pinner, said: “It’s been a  great day, the turn out is fantastic. I have been to this event many of times and the number of people attending has definitely improved.”
The wheelbarrow race kicked off at 3pm with seven teams taking part and having to stop off at several pubs along the way and down ale.

There was a joint win between the Pinner Rugby Club team, Samuel Heath, 30, and Ray Conboy, 37, both from Pinner, and patrons from The Queen’s Head in High Street, Pinner, Elliott Jackson and Ben Miles.
Mr Heath said: “I am really glad we won, it is a great feeling. It was pretty tough though, I was sick a couple of times, drinking the ale and then running up the hill was difficult, but we did it.”

Many race participants wore fancy dress, and the most inventive was worn by Daniel Buckley and his cousin Phil Horan, who dressed as St George and the Dragon.

Daniel has recently started working in Zizzi’s in High Street and Phil came all the way from Bournemouth to take part.

Daniel said: “I am the only male at work and none of the girls wanted to push me around, so I got Phil to do it. We came second last and it wasn’t that easy. It’s good to see the unique things Pinner has going on, there are a lot of quirks like this.”

The dragon costume winners were Pierce Broderick and Max Kupfer.

Conservative ward councillor for Pinner South, Councillor Chris Mote said: “It is a fantastic turnout, I am thrilled to see so many people out and about. The weather is perfect for it too.”
