EMERGENCY vets have saved a West Highland Terrier who swallowed a whole pear.

Rosie the westie was out on a walk with her owners when the fruit got lodged in the bottom of her throat and nearly killed her.

The 10-year-old pet started choking and coughing up foam, but thanks to the quick actions of staff at Vets Now Northolt she was saved with treatment and surgery.

The team on Mandeville Road discovered the pear firmly stuck in the oesophagus after sedating Rosie and carrying out an x-ray and endoscopy. They immediately operated to remove it and it wasn’t long before the westie was sent home safe and well.

Owner Giselle Parsons, of Ruislip, has praised Vets Now for their actions to save her beloved pet last month.

She said: "I would like to say a huge thank you to Vinny, Liron and the rest of the team who saved Rosie’s life. Vinny looked after her so well."

Liron Hirsh, Senior Veterinary Surgeon at Vets Now Northolt, said: “Rosie came to our clinic subdued and very uncomfortable. The duty vet started her investigation and together we diagnosed a foreign body stuck in the lower oesophagus which could not be removed with the endoscope.

"Emergency surgery was performed and the pear was taken out successfully from the stomach. She recovered well and went home after a couple of days."

After successfully coming through her trauma, Rosie is back to her old self according to owner Giselle who added: "We laugh about it now but we had a few sleepless nights until we were sure she was on the mend.

"I would love to say that Rosie has learnt her lesson but 10 days on she was back to her usual tricks, swallowing her food without chewing or tasting it and chasing squirrels in the garden. She has a six inch scar but otherwise you would never know what she went through."
