When Les White, managing director of Uxbridge buidling materials supply company Crescent Buidling Supplies was told of the state of the Fassnidge family memorial he jumped at the chance to help out.

"Early in 2013," Mr White said, "I was approached by Angela Martel, the president of The Fassnidge Bowls Club, who was concerned with the poor condition and collapse of the Fassnidge family memorial and asked if I would provide some building materials for its restoration.

"Being aware of the Fassnidge family business, and indeed the history of this once very well established company, I agreed to help."

The memorial as it was before the restoration

The Fassnidge family business, a large building and constructions company in Uxbridge, was a major employer in the borough around 50 years ago.

After the death of her husband Kate Fassnidge created a memorial park for him in the gardens of their Uxbridge home in the 1920s.

She later handed this over to Hillingdon Council in her will, along with several other properties in Uxbridge High Street.

The park is now the popular Fassnidge Park in Rockingham Road and The Fassnidge Memorial Trust was set up to run a charity with the property and monies bequeathed by Kate Fassnidge.

The Trust, made up of local people who give their time freely, was unable to finance improvements and upkeep of the memorial in Hillingdon and Uxbridge Cemetery in Hillingdon Hill.

Mr White said: "It seemed tragic to me that the memorial should be left to collapse and decay with the passing years and so Is agreed that Crescent Building Supplies would supply any materials that may be required in renovating the memorial.

"I also approached a local stone mason and we agreed that Crescent Building Supplies would cover the labour costs as well as supply any materials.

"Crescent Building Supplies was very pleased to be able to help and I’m sure if Fassnidge were still building, Crescent would be supplying their materials today," he said.
