TEN per cent of adults in Hammersmith and Fulham are currently unemployed.
Figures released by the Office of National Statistics show that a total of 9,700 people were unemployed between April 2009 to March 2010.
This amounts to ten per cent of the working population in the borough and was a rise on the 9,100 total in the beginning of 2009.
The number of people in work dropped from 86,500 to 83,400 in the same period but the number of unfilled job centre vacancies jumped from 797 to 1,243 in the past 12 months.
Employment minister Chris Grayling said: "These figures highlight the crucial importance of the action were are taking to keep the economy moving forward.
"It is essential to create a stable environment where businesses can flourish and create jobs with those on benefits at the front of the queue to take them up.
"That is why we are increasing the support available to people through both Jobcentre Plus and our new Work Programme which will revolutionise the way in which we help the long-term unemployed into sustained employment.
"Only with a successful economy will be able to finally get Britain working again."
H&F council leader Stephen Greenhalgh said: "The latest unemployment figures reflect the current national economic climate. They prove jobs are being offered in the private sector. We are doing all we can to enable local people to take up these opportunities.
"That is exactly why the council has teamed up with Job Centre Plus and Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College, to open the WorkZone.
"Our recruitment service based in the new Shepherds Bush Library and offering employment advice and opportunities targeted at Westfield London and the retail/hospitality sector which is precisely where many of the current vacancies are."
