Trading standards officers are to visit shops in Southall alleged to have put children's lives at risk by selling them fireworks.

Officers will visit a handful of stores, following reports that fireworks have been sold to youngsters under 18 without the proper ID checks.

Doug Love, trading standards manager at Ealing Council said he and his colleagues would talk to shop owners, after footage of an undercover investigation was passed onto them by Five News.

Mr Love spoke to a Five News team, accompanied by a group of 16-year-old actors, after they had visited 10 stores in Southall last Tuesday afternoon.

Five shops reportedly sold fireworks to children, including Somerfield in The Broadway.

Mr Love said: "Now we have had a chance to watch the footage we will be revisiting each of the shops that sold fireworks. The matter will be discussed in more detail."

A Somerfield spokeswoman said: "This was an isolated incident that we are thoroughly investigating to ensure we continue to do everything possible to ensure that we act in accordance with our obligations in respect of the sale of fireworks.

"We are currently reviewing our current training and enforcement procedures at this store.

"As a local community retailer, Somerfield takes its social responsibilities very seriously and has a strict code of practice for sales of fireworks."
