Two men have died and six others injured after a balcony collapsed in one of London’s most prestigious squares.
The man, whose age is not known, was pronounced dead at the scene in Cadogan Square in Chelsea at around 10am today (November 21).
Bystanders said the railing had given way as the men, believed to have been working for a removals firm, hoisted a sofa up.
Another man, whose age is also unknown, was taken to a St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington in critical condition where he later died.
Six other people were treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service (LAS) for minor injuries.
An LAS spokeswoman said: “We were called at 9.58am to Cadogan Square to reports of an incident. We sent three ambulance crews, an advanced paramedic, a hazardous area response team and London’s Air Ambulance. We treated eight patients. Every effort was made to resuscitate a patient but sadly one man died.”
Police are in the process of identifying the men’s next of kin. Police cordons remain in place at this time and the Health and Safety Executive and the Local Authority have been informed.
An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances.
