AFTER Councillor Bill Stephenson graciously crowned me 'Queen of rent-a-quotes' in his letter (November 25), my first royal act is to return the favour by appointing him as my court jester.

Because if Mr Stephenson is anything like as funny when he's wearing a hat with bells on it as he is when he's writing angry letters, the people of Harrow are in for a real treat.

Seeing Mr Stephenson defend his administration's decision to investigate a massive expansion in twinning, while simultaneously trying to distance himself from it, is like watching a humorously inept juggler.

He blames the council motion that started all this on 'a backbench councillor', when it was actually proposed by the chairman of the grants advisory panel, and seconded by the portfolio holder for customer and corporate services.

Mr Stephenson wrote that the council should 'listen to residents', and rather helpfully the Observer put a poll about an inch away from his letter, showing 91 per cent of people are against spending money on twinning.

People have seen what Labour are doing and they don't like it. They see that at the same time as Mr Stephenson's administration is looking into expanding twinning, it is firing dozens of library staff and reviewing the services provided to many vulnerable residents. If all this weren't so serious, you might say Labour have become a laughing stock.
