GIANT tulips lit up Harrow town centre to celebrate Diwali festival of light and promote local businesses.

Twenty one over-sized, illuminated flowers were placed in St Ann's Road for one week to mark the religious event, which is celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs, and to launch of a programme of support for businesses in the area.

The event, on Tuesday last week , was funded by the Mayor of London's Outer London Fund, which Harrow Council will use to revitalise the town centre and North Harrow.

Councillor Keith Ferry, portfolio holder for planning and economic development, said: “These lights are a great way to celebrate Diwali and the first phase of a programme of events and improvements. The town centre has so much to offer and we now call on residents to do their bit too, by coming down and supporting local traders."

The council won £860,000 from the Mayor's fund and will run a series of events up until New Year.
