Yesterday a Spitfire flypast marked the closure of the famous RAF Uxbridge, used as an integral staging post for the No 11 group during the Battle of Britain.

The Mayor of Hillingdon Councillor Shirley Harper-O'Neill attended the ceremony as did MPs and councillors alike, keen to give the famous base a send off.

A blue plaque was also unveiled at the Officers Mess in honour of fighter pilot Douglas Bader who spent several years at RAF Uxbridge.
