Friends have paid loving tribute to a Chiswick teenager electrocuted on train tracks in the early hours of New Year's Day.

Moving messages of condolence have poured in for schoolboy Sam Griffiths, 16, who is thought to been killed while wandering on the tracks near Burgess Hill Station.

Emergency services were called to the west Sussex station at 1.30am after friends saw him fall on to the 750-volt line.

Hundreds of people have posted messages online in memory of the popular young rugby player, who attended nearby Hurstpierpoint College.

One close pal wrote: "Look how many people's lives you have touched Sam. You really were such an amazing lad.

"It still seems so surreal, never forget being next to you at B Hill that night, it just feels like an incredibly bad dream.
'Hope you're in a better place man, miss you dude."

One of his cousins added: "There's a big hole left in our family Sam that no one can ever fill. It breaks my heart to think that you're just not there any more, but you're still in my memories and in my heart."

Friends wept as they gathered on January 2 to place flowers and messages at the site of Sam's death.

Chief Inspector Alison Palmer, of British Transport Police, said: "This would appear to be a tragic accident.

"Sam was with a group of friends at the station around 1.30am and it appears he was trespassing on the tracks when he tripped and fell onto the live rail.

"His friends immediately raised the alarm, and despite the efforts of paramedics, Sam was declared dead on arrival at Royal Sussex County Hospital.

"Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time."
