A flooding hotspot in Bedfont has dried up after more than a decade of causing problems in the area.

Following an inspection on the Staines Road near Clockhouse roundabout earlier this year Thames Water concluded the roots of the trees were causing the blockage in the sewer, which led to the floods.

The roots were cut in October but the first real test came after heavy downpours over 24 hours last week (15).

Councillor for Bedfont Liz Mammatt who took it upon herself to get in touch with the water company after no action was taken following an area forum meeting last year, checked the area the next morning and the "problem seemed to have cured," she said.

Ms Mammatt added: “The issue was raised at the then West Area Forum in 2012 but due to the Labour Council’s inertia, I decided to contact Thames Water direct myself at the beginning of March 2013, involving Councillor Tony Arbour, our Conservative Greater London Assemblyman.

"Constant liaison with Thames Water has revealed that they, having approached TfL for access, conducted an inspection by CCTV in July. It showed that the roots of trees were causing the blockage in the sewer, which led to the flooding. They were cut in October. Thames Water then verified that the sewer was free-flowing and this was confirmed to me by telephone on December 11, 2013."

For now residents and commuters in the area will be flood free.
