John Quille was told his £34,000 black Mercedes 3.5 litre CLS coupe model had been hit by a falling tree.

It is believed a fierce gust of wind toppled the tree in Cardinal Road, Eastcote at about 1.40pm.

"I was in the house and one of the neighbours ran across the road and said: "Your car's buried under a tree'" Mr Quille, 71, told the Gazette on Friday afternoon.

"I just went out to see the lovely decoration that was on top of the car."

He said he could see two distinct dents in the bodywork but it was hard to see the extent of the damage because of the foliage.

Retired Mr Quille, of Hughes Road, Hayes, had gone to the home of his daughter, Nicky Fullbrook, to do some decorating, 'doing the Good Samaritan act, and it spat in my eye', he said, ruefully.

"The Lord wasn't protecting me today," added Mr Quille, who said the most important thing was that nobody had been hurt in the incident.

He said he had called Hillingdon Council and his insurance company.

The tree also damaged a Citroen van parked nearby, toppling right across the bonnet.
