Travellers who were camping out in Gunnersbury Park for three days have now moved to Northfields’ Blondin Park.

Northfields councillor David Millican has confirmed they are the same group and that civil proceedings will start today (June 12) to try evict them.

Mr Millican went to the park yesterday evening (June 11) where he spoke to the public, senior council officers and the police and saw about 30 travellers and several caravans.

He said the lead traveller told police they would be moving on in a couple of days.

The Northfields councillor said: “I went at the earliest opportunity and we will do all we can to move them on as soon as possible.

“They were coming and going last night and didn’t seem to be causing trouble but clearly that’s not where they are supposed to be.”

More than a dozen caravans and vans arrived on Sunday evening (June 8) in the south-east corner of Gunnersbury Park, in Gunnersbury Avenue, on the borders of Brentford and Acton.

The cost of security, legal fees and clearing the mess they left behind is estimated by Hounslow council, which must foot the bill, at £18,000.

After initially refusing to go, they were issued with a notice to leave by Hounslow Council yesterday (June 11) morning, giving them 24 hours in which to move on or face court action.

The situation escalated that afternoon when the council closed the park just before 5pm due to safety fears, with reports of people racing cars around the grounds. One man claimed someone had tried to run him down in a van when he started taking photos.

An Ealing council spokesperson said: “We are doing everything in our power to evict the travellers from Blondin Park as quickly and safely as possible.

"Legal proceedings are in motion and we are working with the police to see what else can be done.

"The group gained access to the park on Wednesday evening by breaking the lock on the gate.

"We have not yet assessed the cost of clearing rubbish or repairing damage caused by the group.”
