A TRANSPLANT patient surprised staff at Harefield Hospital when he arrived for his appointment carrying the Olympic Torch.

Richard Burbedge carried the flame on part of the Reading leg of last month’s relay, in recognition of his work raising awareness about organ donation.

He brought the iconic torch on a routine visit to the Hill End Road Hospital, where he had a double lung transplant June 2009.

Richard won two golds at this year’s European Heart and Transplant Games, and he has also been given an inspiration award by the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

He said: “I don’t really care about winning, it’s more about going along to compete at these events, and knowing I can do it.”

Richard will open this year’s Harefield fun run at the hospital on September 2.
