A FELTHAM councillor has quit the council’s Tory group amid claims he was bullying Civic Centre staff.
Feltham North ward councillor Allan Wilson claims complaints, which he strongly denies, were getting close to harassment of him and led to his decision to sit as an independent.
He informed Hounslow Conservative group leader, councillor Peter Thompson, of his move, stating he no longer recognised the whip, and began sitting as an independent councillor on Monday, November 12.
Mr Wilson (pictured) said: “Certain members of staff are targeting me about things I am supposed to have done. There are complaints I was bullying members of staff in the council, but the only contact I have had is for Freedom of Information and I do not consider that as bullying.
“The original inquiry was ongoing for a year and now another list has been presented to me of so-called complaints. This is getting close to harassment. Rather than have my party slated because of what I’m doing I decided to become an independent.
“I’m still a Conservative but I’m an independent Conservative which gives me greater freedom.”
He told the Chronicle the complaints, which are considered a serious breach of conduct, have yet to go before the council’s standards committee.
He believes he has been wrongly attacked for representing and supporting residents complaining about noise from the Feltham branch of Hounslow Islamic Relief Association (HIRA), in Hounslow Road.
"They [residents] put their faith in me but I am getting the flack," he said. "Officers have been complaining I have been bullying. It’s absolutely ridiculous."
Mr Wilson, who does not plan to stand at the next elections in 2014, denies all counts of bullying.
Mr Thompson said he was ‘surprised’ by Mr Wilson’s decision but there were no 'hard feelings’.
"He wanted to campaign for residents quite forcefully and determinedly and felt he would be freer to do so outside the party," added Mr Thompson.
A council spokesman addressing Councillor Wilson’s claims of bullying said: "Councillor Allan Wilson has resigned from the Hounslow Conservative Group and will now be sitting as an independent councillor.
“He remains a member of the council and one of the three ward councillors for Feltham North, and for the time being will continue to be a member of the committees to which he has already been appointed. In recent months, Councillor Wilson has made requests concerning casework and queries from his constituents and these have been dealt with in the appropriate manner.
"The council has a process for dealing with complaints against councillors, and we can confirm that there have been no formal complaints made by council officers through this process."
