Westminster Conservatives' claim that they are helping hard pressed, low-income residents at a time of world-wide economic difficulties is absolutely false.
Just take two simple facts. First, the Conservatives are planning to increase the amount that they take from council tenants from £6.3million in 2005/06 to £9.5m in 2008/09.
This money goes straight into the council's General Fund and is not used to improve services, but to subsidise already well-off council tax payers.
This 50 per cent increase in the amount of money taken from council tenants is a straightforward redistribution of money away from the poor and into the bank accounts of the rich.
Second, the costs to residents of the Pimlico District Heating Undertaking will be rising by 45 per cent on average from October 1. And that is after a refund of 30 per cent in respect of the massive council overcharge for 2007/08.
This means that the real 18-month increase is a mind-boggling 107 per cent!
This unacceptable and unjustified increase in the cost of heating will push many low-income households on fixed incomes into even greater fuel poverty.
And at the same time, the Conservatives are planning £50m cuts to the Housing capital programme and slashing £800,000 from the street sweeping, refuse collection and recycling service.
It seems to me that Westminster residents, particularly those on low and middle incomes, are getting a very bad deal from the Conservatives.
