Round-the-clock policing could be introduced in Hammersmith Broadway in the wake of recent riots and stabbings.

Borough commander Kevin Hurley has been negotiating with Hammersmith and Fulham Council to introduce a scheme to the area, much like the 24/7 police projects which have been running in Fulham Broadway and Shepherd's Bush since April 2007.

Those pilot schemes have put 62 extra officers on the streets thanks to £4million of funding from the council and private businesses.

Detective Chief Superintendent Hurley said: "I think it is very important that we have very strong, visible police patrols, particularly in town centres.

"We hope to be able to do that in Hammersmith. I know the council leadership is most keen to do so. We are looking at how we might be able to liaise with our council partners to fund the extra policing."

The senior officer's revelation comes after a riot and two stabbings on Hammersmith Broadway this month. Seven suspects were arrested after the riots on August 10 which left seven police officers injured.

He added: "We are pain stakingly going through CCTV tapes. In the next two weeks other people involved in those attacks on my officers can expect early morning knocks from us and an invitation to breakfast."

The policeman said the October opening of Westfield shopping centre in Shepherd's Bush will bring additional challenges.
