Hillingdon politicians have paid their own tributes on social media to Labour politician Tony Benn, who has died aged 88.

Mr Benn, who had suffered from ill health since a stroke in 2011, passed away at his home in west London this morning (Friday).

Hayes and Harlington MP and fellow left winger John McDonnell said on Twitter: "Tony Benn was the articulate advocate for socialism who inspired my generation and gave people hope of a fair and equal society."

Conservative MP John Randall, for Uxbridge and South Ruislip, also took to twitter to express his sorrow and share memories.

He said: "So sorry to hear of the passing of Tony Benn. One of my personal memories, standing and speaking alongside him at Trafalgar Square.

"Once sat with Tony Benn and [former Prime Minister] Ted Heath in [House of Commons] smoking room. Amazing experience. A bygone era.

"Tony Benn; not sure we will see his like again. I was able to agree with him on a few issues but what an orator. My thoughts with his family."

Prime Minister David Cameron wrote: "Tony Benn was a magnificent writer, speaker and campaigner. There was never a dull moment listening to him, even if you disagreed with him."

A member of parliament for 50 years until 2000, and a cabinet member under prime ministers Harold Wilson and James Callaghan, Mr Benn, often pictured with his trademark pipe in hand, was admired as an impassioned public speker and a man of principle, who campaigned for democracy and socialist policies, and in later life rallied against the west's "war on terror."

Mr Benn leaves behind four children – Stephen, Hilary, Melissa and Joshua - and ten grandchildren.

Former Ruislip and Northwood MP John Wilkinson, who represented the constituency for 26 years until 2005, died earlier this month.
