THIS is the moment a drunken thug stamped on the head of a soldier during a savage assault in High Street, Uxbridge.

The two brutes shown towering over the helpless victim are James O'Neill, 27, of Bury Avenue, Hayes, and Dane Flynn, 18, of Halsway, Hayes.

They were given lengthy jail terms for the unprovoked and sickening attack on December 6 last year, which left the man in hospital.

The 32-year-old victim is a lance corporal and driver with the Royal Logistics Corps, stationed at RAF Uxbridge . He had been on a night out with friends and was set upon in the early hours as he made his way home.

His injuries included a facial wound that required 12 stitches, a chipped tooth and a swollen jaw.

The incident was caught on CCTV and showed Flynn and O'Neill beating the man until he lay still on the pavement. Flynn could then be seen stamping on the victim's head before leaving the man for dead.

Flynn and O'Neill were arrested and charged within six days of the attack, following a police investigation.

They admitted wounding with intent when confronted with the overwhelming evidence against them.

Both were sentenced at Isleworth

Crown Court to serve four years in jail.

Flynn, who is classed as dangerous, will have to apply for parole after that time but will be on licence for life.

The investigating officer in the case,

who has asked not to be named, said: "The assault was completely unprovoked and extremely violent. The victim was chosen for the attack, which was fuelled by alcohol. I want to thank the

British Army in supporting us with this prosecution and I can only commend the bravery and determination shown by the soldier, who went back to work within a few days of the assault."
