RESIDENTS, shopkeepers and councillors have successfully defended their village against the invasion of a supermarket chain.

Hillingdon Council turned down an application last night (Wednesday) from Tesco, in a spectacular people's victory which united politicians from all parties, in the defence of the old-fashioned neighbourhood High street.

Petitioners, representing both traders and residents, convinced council officers that the application for an express store at the Kings Arms site, Breakspear Road North, Harefield, should be rejected on planning grounds.

Backed by ward councllors Richard Barnes and Henry Higgins, who also spoke at the meeting at Hillingdon civic centre, the refusal was announced, mainly on traffic concerns and potential problems with deliveries, to cheers from a strong Harefield contingent.

A Tesco representative however, said they could accomodate villagers' and officers' concerns.

The company could still appeal against the decision but if so, protestors will fight on with renewed vigour after their victory.
