A new Tesco store has agreed not to stock cheap high-strength lager and cider after police warned that vagrants and street drinkers might be attracted to the store in Acton.

Police say they are satisfied after managers agreed at a licensing hearing last Friday not to sell alcohol before 8am, an hour after opening.

They initially raised concerns because the supermarket, which opened in The Vale today,is in an area troubled by high levels of vehicle crime, theft and robbery.

Licensing officer PC Les Smith said: "There are no concerns at the moment. If anything should come to light, we have the review process."

Cheap drinks of more than 5.5 per cent alcohol will not be sold at the Tesco Metro.
