TESCO has admitted that rats were spotted inside its Feltham store but the problem is now in the past and the shop has been given a clean bill of health.
Following an earlier story in the Chronicle, in which Tesco claimed the rat infestation was purely outside the Dukes Green Avenue store, readers contacted us to say they had seen them inside.
A spokesman for the supermarket giant admitted that sightings had been reported in the past but said Hounslow Council's Environmental Health team were happy the problem had been eliminated.
David Dermondy, of Becketts Close, Feltham was shopping at Tesco in November when he saw two rats scuttle across the aisle. I was just doing my shopping when I saw a rat run from underneath one side of the shelving to the other.
“I went to the customer services and told them about it but they fobbed me off and said it was all in hand. I am not here to badmouth Tesco but they are not telling the truth. They may be doing everything they can now but they haven't in the past.”
Another shopper spotted a rat when she was in the store in March. The problem is believed to stem from a rats nest in a neighbouring field and in last week's Chronicle, shoppers complained about seeing rats around the bins and in the bushes next to the store.
And, despite the revelation that rats have been spotted inside the building in the past, a spokesman for Tesco emphasised that the problem in store had been dealt with, adding that it was a perfectly safe place to shop.
“Those instances were in the past,” he said. “Environmental Health have given the store a completely clean bill of health. There is no issue within the store.
“There were some sightings in the past but there is absolutely no issue in store any more – the place is perfectly fine to shop in.”
