J HILL tries to excuse the obscene expenses which senior Tory councillors have voted for themselves on the grounds that they do at least try to hold down the council tax (Chronicle, July 24).

But the problem is that we end up paying in other ways. For example, under Labour, the council

would remove large items of rubbish - such as a wardrobe or bath for only £10 (and free to senior citizens). Now there is a minimum fee of £25.

Has J Hill not noticed the way this has led to more fly-tipping? Why, it was reported on the Informer front page in March that Hounslow is now the fourth dirtiest council in the capital.

But so what if the Tories are turning our borough into a slum? At least the top councillors are doing 'very nicely, thank you'.
