AT LEAST 10 people have been arrested in yet another immigration bust in Southall – the fourth of its kind in as many months.

Officers from the UK Border Agency swooped on Heathrow Engine Centre in Brent Road at about 10.30am yesterday (Thursday).

The UKBA had received intelligence alleging that illegal workers from India, the Ukraine, Russia and Albania were being employed at the site.

Sniffer dogs were used to find anyone attempting to hide during the raid.

The employer now has 28 days to prove they carried out the correct checks on employees’ paperwork, or they face a fine of up to £100,000.

Fari Smith, assistant director at the UK Border Agency, said: “It went very well and all went according to plan. We made 10 arrests and spoke to about 40 people, so we’ve arrested approximately a quarter of the workforce.

“The message this is sending to other employers is: don’t do it. Carry out all the necessary checks. Hopefully, they’ll get the message.”

Southall has become a notorious area for illegal immigrants. There have been at least three other major busts in the area so far this year. A total of 15 people were arrested following raids across a number of sites.

And in June of this year, three people, all of whom were based in Southall, were jailed for a combined total of 19 years for the biggest immigration visa scam in British history.
