FIVE young swimmers in Harrow are the first recipients in the UK of a new medal for water-borne lifesaving skills.

The teenagers earned the highest of three levels – gold, silver and bronze – from the Royal Lifesaving Society’s Survive and Save course introduced in September last year. It is taught by The Survive and Save Club at Harrow Leisure Centre in Christchurch Avenue, Wealdstone.

Devun Gorasia, 15, Nyal Vekaria, 15, Shravan Patel, 16, and brothers Akash, 15, and Janak Hirani, 15, collected their gold medallions in a presentation ceremony on Friday, May 4, when another 15 youngsters picked up their silver and bronze medals.

The swimmers impressed assessors with their advanced rescuing, self-rescue and other survival techniques.

Chairman of The Survive and Save Club, Sally Baldwin, said: “We are very proud of them. They have worked really hard for the awards.”
