A CARING grandmother collected nearly £2,000 from generous shoppers for her ‘charming’ granddaughter.

Tessa Bastien, 47, spent all of Saturday and Sunday at Asda supermarket in Forty Lane, Wembley, with a team of 13 volunteers packing bags and helping people take shopping to their cars.

Ms Bastien and her family have raised nearly two-thirds of the £50,000 target they need to send five-year-old Mia, who has severe cerebral palsy, to Missouri in the United States for an operation which could help her to walk.

They have already raised £32,000 and Ms Bastien said this would not have been possible without the generosity of people in the local area.

Ms Bastien, of Farm Avenue, Wembley, said: “People were so kind not only with their money but with their words as well, it has given me so much strength to keep going.”

Mia Ferreira lives in Kilburn with her mother, Jayde Michael, and her whole family work hard to raise funds for the charity, called Mia’s Missouri Mission.

Her grandmother said: “I am not just saying this because she is my granddaughter but even though she can’t walk or can’t talk she is the most charming girl in the world. Anyone who meets Mia can’t help to fall in love with her.”
