A WOMAN is raising money for a hospital as a thank you for the treatment her father received.

Sarah Gashier is taking part in the Superhero Run in Regent’s Park on Sunday, May 18, and has pledged the cash she raises to St Mark’s Hospital Foundation, the charity that funds the specialist intestinal and colorectal disorder St Mark’s Hospital, in Watford Road, Harrow.

The 22-year-old, who studies dietetics and nutrition at King’s College London, said: “St Mark’s is where my dad was treated last year for bowel cancer and he stayed there for quite a long time because he suffered quite a lot of complications.

“I saw him come such a long way and over the six weeks we really got to know the team and see what they do.

“The hospital doesn’t receive much NHS funding and relies on donations made by the foundation for research.

“I wanted to do something to give something back.”

Her father, 73-year-old retired physics professor Dr Fouad Gashier, underwent treatment between May and July last year.

Ms Gashier, who boosted her charity coffers with a cake sale held on Tuesday at Northwick Park Hospital, which shares the St Mark’s Hospital site, said: “It’s my first 10km run. I have done a 5km run before so I’ll just be happy to complete it. I’m training for it and I hope to get a good time, but I’ll be running on my own.

“At the moment I have raised £190 and I’m hoping to raise a bit more.”

Ms Gashier, of Uxbridge, thinks she will dress as Superwoman for the run, but has not not quite made up her mind yet.
