THE class bias of the new government could not be more blatant than its decision to scrap the education maintenance allowance for over-16s.

It may be only £30 a week to those means-tested students, but it makes a real difference to poorer families whose teenagers want to stay in education.

Given the vast amounts of our money that the government is willing to hand over to bail out those bankers who stand to get their fingers burned in Irish government defaults, it is disgraceful that our teenagers should contribute in this way.

The hike in tuition fees is a similar attack on working-class kids.

I call on all trade unionists and students to protest in every possible way about these measures, especially outside parliament when the tuition fees is debated before Christmas.

Let's have education for liberation, not for the dole queue.
