A pupil, who was bullied at school because he couldn't speak English, has been praised by his teacher for his outstanding achievements and ability to help others.

Naqib Ahmadi, 15, who goes to Acton High School and arrived from Afghanistan seven years ago, is now a shining example to his peers. His teacher Shahid Karwani said: "This student has not had the best start in life but demonstrates essential academic success and is a role model for many other students in his year. He can serve as an example to many adults who are not as responsible, is caring and attentive and shows strength of will and dilligence. His aspirations and enthusiasm will benefit his future studying and career. Such students are the dream of any teacher. I am honoured to have such a wonderful student in my class."

Naqib, from Hayes, took up boxing after being initially bullied because of his lack of English. He said: "I used to stand in front of the mirror doing shadow boxing and then took up the real thing. It was the only way I could defend myself." He now goes to a boxing club in Ladbroke Grove which has graced champs like George Groves, who he has met.

Naqib said: "Going there is a privilege. Now I focus on my school work. Afghanistan is like what you see on the news. I hope it changes one day. I love it here which is why I want to be a police officer. This country has helped my life and I want to help this country."
