A MAN who stabbed two people with broken glass in a street fight has been jailed.

Ian Popham, of Hornbill Close, Uxbridge, was sentenced to five years and three months behind bars for the bloody attack in High Street, Uxbridge, in the early hours of October 28 last year.

On Wednesday last week, Harrow Crown Court heard that Popham was with two friends at a cab office when an argument broke out with another group.

As his female friend was getting into a taxi, she was dragged out and attacked by another woman. Popham’s male friend was then set upon by two men, one a serving soldier.

When the brawl stopped and the attackers walked off, Popham ran after them and another fight started.

Punches and kicks were exchanged, and Popham then grabbed a shard of glass off the floor and stabbed both men three times in the neck and head.

The men did not suffer any severe physical injuries.

The 26-year-old, who has one previous conviction for using threatening words and behaviour that were racially aggravated, was arrested within hours.

He initially denied two charges of GBH wounding with intent, but he changed his plea just as his trial was about to start in April.

He was sentenced to five years and three months for each charge, to run concurrently, and will serve half of this minus the 214 days he has already spent in custody before being released on licence.

Handing down the term, Judge Graham Arran said: “I take into account that there was a degree of provocation, and a lack of premeditation as far as the weapon is concerned, although you were seen chasing the men for quite some distance after they had run away.

"This sort of incident is always a tragedy for everyone involved.”
