SPUD-erman and The Termin-TATER may be among the root vegetable characters spotted at a contest looking for the best face on a potato.

Harrow Garden Centre in Headstone Lane, Harrow, is asking green-fingered schoolchildren to create weird and wonderful creatures and people out of the humble kitchen stable using a combination of art, props and ingenuity.

The competition is part of a Grow Your Own Potatoes Weekend on February 18 and 19.

Garden centre manager, Mike Townend, said: "It is a fun idea and we hope as many youngsters as possible enter.

"We don't have any hard and fast rules but we are looking for some really creative and fun models."

There are two age categories, four to seven-year-olds, and eight to 11-year-olds.

The closing date for entries at the garden centre is noon on Sunday, February 19, and there will be gardening prizes for the winners.
