TEN sporty students will jump into their running shoes and join the crowds to cheer on the Olympic flame when it comes to Ealing next month.
The group of 12 to 15-year-olds from Brentside High School, Hanwell have been selected to become official torch bearer followers for Lloyds TSB.
They will sprint alongside volunteers carrying the flame as it passes from Northala Fields, Northolt, through Southall and Ealing Broadway to Walpole Park on Tuesday, July 24.
The lucky team are Elliot Jex, Rabya Ibrahim, Desmond Ofasi, Fahad Mohammed, Daniel Crayne, Marzenka Opalinska, Madelyn Begley, Louie Waldock, Kartikay Kochhar and Sonik Silwal.
PE teacher Donna Hyde picked the students who have excelled at sport and have championed the Olympics in special assemblies and geography and art classes.
She said: “It’s incredible these young students have been given the opportunity to get involved in the Olympics and have our school name out there in the Olympics. I chose certain students who are sport leaders and who’ve worked hard to promote the Olympics.
“Most of them are borough champions where they have competed in their sport against other schools in Ealing. We’ve got some true athletes who have won in high jump, long jump and 200 metres.”
The team will join school friend Sydney Richards, 14, who was one of two Ealing residents selected by Ealing Council to carry the torch through the borough.
Tickets to the Olympic torch party in Walpole Park sold out within hours but residents are encouraged to line the streets to show their support.
