A SPORTS centre will close to the public during the day when a school takes over its management.
Lampton Sports Centre, in Lampton Avenue, Hounslow, will close during school hours from December 19. The facilities will still be available to the public in the evening, at weekends and during school holidays.
The complex, in the grounds of Lampton School, opened in October 2006 and is owned by the school, but was part-funded by National Lottery money.
It has been managed by the council’s leisure contractor Fusion Lifestyle but the school has decided to take over responsibility.
The sports hall was previously reserved for school use during the day but other facilities, including the gym, were open to the public at those times.
Fusion Lifestyle said all 300-plus members of the centre, which averaged 3,500 visitors a month, would be contacted.
A spokesman for Fusion said the centre was closing due to increasing pupil numbers at the school, but the school said this was not the case. He said it had terminated its agreement with the contractor ‘amicably’.
The school spokesman added: “The centre was part-funded by the National Lottery. As such, the school is committed to community use of the facility.”
Fusion’s divisional manager Wayne Hawkins said: “Whilst we regret the closure of Lampton Sports Centre, its users may be pleased to know Fusion Lifestyle manages other sport and leisure facilities across the borough on behalf of Hounslow Council, including sites in Isleworth, Brentford, Hanworth and Chiswick, which include state-of-the-art facilities including gyms, swimming pools, sports halls, courts and health suites, plus packed group exercise class schedules.”
