A Fulham councillor who fractured his jaw on holiday did not know it was broken for six days.

Cllr Anthony Lillis slipped on marble stairs in his Costa del Sol apartment and hit his face on a large door handle. Initially he thought his face was just swollen, but on Friday he went to the Accident and Emergency department in Charing Cross Hospital, Hammersmith, where X-rays revealed the break.

The 41-year-old, who represents Town ward, Fulham, said: "Somebody had walked upstairs from the swimming pool with wet feet and I slipped on the water.

"I was at the top of the stairs and because wet marble is so slippery, I flew through the air.

"Luckily I fell up the stairs but my face hit this huge door handle.

"I was taking anti-inflammatories, hoping the swelling would go down, but on Friday I realised I should go to hospital."

He had to cancel an appointment to attend the launch of a mental health care project in Hammersmith on Friday. Doctors have told him because the bone is not displaced he will not need an operation.
