AN ICE cream parlour was one of two Southall businesses ordered to pay up after fly-tipping.

The owner of Creams in Southall Broadway got a frosty reception at Ealing Magistrates Court, where he was made to fork out more than £1,500.

Mr Balal Aqil admitted six offences of failing to prevent his staff dumping sacks of rubbish on the pavement outside the business in November 2011.

He was fined at the court on Friday, February 10 following investigations by Ealing Council’s Envirocrime officers.

CCTV images recorded by the Envirocrime team showed staff fly-tipping on six occasions, despite the company having previously bought pre-paid commercial waste sacks from Ealing Council.

Creams was fined £900 and ordered to pay the council’s full costs of £718.15, plus a victim surcharge of £15, making a total of £1,633.15.

In another case heard on the same day, Surbir Singh Arora, the owner of Harsh Off-licence in Lady Margaret Road admitted four fly-tipping offences.

Mr Arora was fined £800 and ordered to pay costs of £999 and a victim surcharge of £15 – a total of £1,814.

CCTV evidence showed Mr Arora driving a van to dump black plastic sacks and empty cardboard boxes on the pavement beside a recycling bank on Lady Margaret Road in September 2011.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, Ealing leader for transport and the environment said: “Fly-tipping is completely unacceptable and leaves taxpayers to pick up the bill for clearing up other people’s mess.

“We have brought several Ealing businesses to court for fly-tipping recently and I hope this sends out the message that we will not tolerate it. There is no excuse for fly-tipping and businesses need to take responsibility for ensuring their staff comply with the law.”
