A POPULAR youngster has topped a vote by nearly 2,000 schoolchildren to become the borough's youth mayor.

Jahanara Chaudry, who lives in Southall and attends Featherstone High School, was presented with her robes of office at Ealing Town Hall.

Her appointment on May 10 came after 1,865 secondary school pupils from across the borough voted in polling booths or online to choose their favourite out of 18 candidates.

Jahanara will represent young people at official events and champion their issues.

She will take her lead from the borough's new adult mayor councillor John Gallagher who was appointed on Tuesday.

Jahanaran said: “Young people’s opinions are important, so I think it’s really good that the council has a youth mayor.

“I would like to thank them for this wonderful opportunity and also say how grateful I am to all those who came along to the Town Hall to vote for me.

“I will do my best in office to ensure the council and other organisations listen to the voices of teenagers across the borough.”
