CASH could soon become a thing of the past in North Paddington, as residents prepare to exchange good deeds instead.

From cleaning to dog-walking, civic-minded Harrow Road traders and residents could soon be offering an hour of their time, in exchange for the same amount of someone else's time.

The plans, to be drawn up by Harrow Road Neighbourhood Partnership (HRNP), would be introduced to bring a greater sense of community to the North Paddington area.

Kierra Box, of the HRNP, explained that the idea was still in its early stages, but could be up and running by September.

"An hour of doctor or lawyer's time is just as important as a teenager helping out with painting," she said.

"People could give up their time in groups or on a oneto-one basis. The level of resident interest has already been quite high.

"The general feeling is that it could provide a great way for people to create better links with their neighbourhood."

She is now working on collecting a list of skills people are prepared to 'donate' in return for favours from other people.

Ms Box added: "It's partly about saying 'it doesn't matter how much money you have to access services, but if you can do something for someone else, then they can do something for you. It's a way of equalising the community. Everyone has something to give."

All participants will be properly vetted, with police checks, to provide assurance to residents and businesses.

One eager resident is Gerald Moore, who lives in Tavistock Crescent, North Paddington. He said: "I've got a degree in gardening, I used to be an engineer and I repair and clean antiques.

"I could help people with any of those things in return for an hour of their time. "I think it's a great idea."

Ahmed Rahman, 21, who works at Rahman Cash and Carry in Harrow Road, added his support to the scheme.

He said: "It's a good idea. I would give up some of my time if someone needed help in their house, for example with painting."

Accounting skills were offered by Ahmed Jama, who works at Traviva shop in Harrow Road.
