TALENTED students have been accepted to Cambridge University as their sixth form ranks 55th out of more than 4,000 in national league tables.

Bishop Ramsey School in Hume Way, Ruislip, has been celebrating the success of its sixth form students, and two in particular who are hoping for a place at a prestigious university.

Cambridge University hopefuls Alastair Poole and Victoria Fischbacher, both 17 years-old, have been offered conditional places dependant on their summer A Level results.

Alastair, who lives in Hatch End, said he did not expect to be able to apply for the top university after getting his GCSE results.

“At the end of GCSEs I wouldn’t have considered it because of the grades I achieved, but I have just felt more comfortable doing the subjects I am doing now than when we had to do the broad range of subjects at GCSE.

“I am focused on studying the things I am interested in. I need to get an A* and two As so it is nervewracking. My AS levels went well so I hope I can do enough in my exams.”

Alastair has been offered a place, based on his results, at Peter House College to study maths and physics.

Victoria, who lives in Ruislip, hopes to join him at Cambridge to study Social and Political Sciences. Both students achieved straight As in their As exams at the end of the school year last summer, and were successful after interviews at the university in December.

“After the interview I had no idea whether it went well or not,” Alastair said. “There is quite a lot of pressure to fo to university because both my parents did, and I am looking to move out and do some cooking - I won’t be living off Pot Noodles every night,” he insisted.

The news of their conditional acceptance came as School Performance Tables were published, placing Bishop Ramsey Sixth Form in 55th position out of 4,273 sixth forms nationally for the progress students make in their A Level studies.

Headteacher Andrew Wilcock said: “There is a real ethos of achievement and mutual support across the Sixth Form; a ‘can do’ attitude backed up by some first rate teaching that helps all members of the Sixth Form perform to their best.

“Our Sixth Formers are great role models for our younger students. They work hard and contribute a lot to the school.”

Paralympic champion Natasha Baker and author of The Bone Season Samantha Shannon are both former Bishop Ramsey students who have gone on to achieve great success.
