SIPSON'S oldest resident who proudly supported the anti-Heathrow expansion campaign and became one of its most endearing figureheads has died.

Jack Clark, of Sipson Road, had only celebrated his 97th birthday last month and looked set to continue to thrive in the village which had been his home for more than 80 years.

He is thought to have been taken ill at home this morning (Monday) and despite paramedics being quickly on the scene he could not be revived.

He had started the year by seeing permission granted for a third runway at the airport which was nothing but fields when he first moved to the area.

His home stands to be demolished to make way for the expansion and Mr Clark had been staunch in his desire not to see that happen.

Brian Sobey, of Harmondsworth and Sipson Residents' Association (HASRA) paid tribute to Mr Clark, calling him 'a grand old man.'

He said: "He was 97 but he was still active right to the end. He loved his bowls and he loved his pigeons. He was absolutely amazing.

"He was used as a figurehead of our campaign simply because he had been here the longest.

"I believe there are at least three generations of Clarks in the village thanks to him.

"He met journalists, politicians, climate campaigners and the best tribute we can pay him will be when we defeat the Government's plan to expand Heathrow.

"It is such a shame to lose him. He seemed indestructible."
