HOUSEHOLDERS are being offered the chance to save money on their energy bills before the weather starts to get cold.

Registration is open for the next Big London Energy Switch, a scheme that combines the buying power of thousands of the capital’s families to force gas and electricity companies to bid for their custom – with the guarantee of cheaper tariffs.

The ‘reverse auction’, overseen by London’s local authorities, takes place on October 16. People who sign up will receive an offer to switch contracts that outlines the prices they will pay. There is no obligation to accept the offer and change utility supplier.

Barbara McRae, 85, from South Harrow made a saving in the first round in April. “I decided to sign up because my bills are getting more and more expensive,” she said. “I was very pleased when I heard I had made a saving. It was very easy to switch.”

Almost 2,500 people from Harrow were among 30,000 people across London who signed up to the two previous auctions, in April and June. The average household saving was more than £100.

Households have until October 15 to sign up at www.biglondonenergyswitch.org.uk, or calling Harrow Council on 020 8901 2600.
