This is the shocking video of schoolchildren risking their lives to cross a road beside the A4 in Hounslow which prompted transport chiefs to promise a review.

Scores of schoolchildren cross each day at the junction of the Great West Road A4 and Vicarage Farm Road, on the border of Hounslow and Heston.

The danger was highlighted by a worried mother, who demanded action as she posted this shocking video of youngsters taking their lives in their hands as cars whizzed past yards away.

There is a dotted line at the junction but no pedestrian lights, meaning those crossing must look out for motorists turning off the main road.

The mother who took this video asked not to be named but said she planned to start a petition for a proper pedestrian crossing at the junction, near Lampton School.

"This is a main accident road junction. It leads to two of the most popular and high-achieving schools in the local area and it's deadly to cross," she added.

"I always worry about my 16-year-olds crossing it twice a day to get to Lampton, and I have seen smaller children and elderly people struggling to cross it safely."

Responding to the video and the call for action, Nigel Hardy, Transport for London's (TfL) head of sponsorship and road space management, said: "Road safety is and remains a key priority of ours. We are constantly reviewing our road network to ensure it remains as safe as possible.

"The pedestrian and cyclist crossing point on Vicarage Farm Road forms part of our ongoing programme of possible improvements, and is to be reviewed in the coming year."

Hounslow Council's deputy leader Amrit Mann said it would lobby TfL to 'explore options' for addressing safety at the crossing.
