A CHURCH was attacked by a vandal armed with an airgun during the Easter weekend.

Ken Pennells, property steward at Kingsdown Church in Northfields Avenue, Northfields, went to inspect the site on Tuesday morning and found that six windows had been damaged, counting about 11 holes in all. A ball bearing was found nearby.

He said: "I'm hugely disappointed - shattered, even. This church is supposed to be a facility for the benefit of the community and then people do something like this.

"There's been a glass front here for 50 years and these windows have been here for nearly 12 months but nothing like this has happened before."

Mr Pennells said he left the church on Sunday at about 8pm, and believes the culprit struck later that night.

"They've caused about £1,000 of damage. We're insured and we've reported it to the police but it still makes us depressed," he said.

"All we wanted to do is create something that just makes the neighbourhood look nicer."

Mr Pennells said he does not expect the church to be closed while the windows are replaced. He said if anyone has any information they should call the church on 020 8567 0172.

A spokesman for Northfield Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "There were no witnesses to the incident and no reports of anyone being injured as a result. Anyone with any information can also call the police on 0300 123 1212."
