The second phase of a 520 home waterside development in Brentford has been given the go-ahead by Hounslow Council.

The next round of work at Brentford Lock West will see 141 new homes built and new commercial space created along Commerce Road.

ISIS Waterside Regeneration was given permission back in 2011 to redevelop the 6.4 hectare site beside the Grand Union Canal, which was home to a number of rundown warehouses.

As well as hundreds of homes, the development - work on which is well underway - will include a new waterside eatery, rooftop allotments, and a watersports hub run by Brentford FC Community Sports Trust.

Final approval for the detailed phase two plans was granted on December 22 under delegated authority, meaning the decision was made by a planning officer rather than councillors. The new homes include four bedroom townhouses and a collection of one, two and three bedroom apartments.

Mæ Architects has been appointed to design the second phase and ISIS said the firm would work closely with the local community.

Katie Sully, development director at ISIS, said: "With homes on the initial phase at Brentford Lock West selling well, securing planning for the second phase marked a great end to a very successful year in 2014.

"The scheme has already had a positive impact on this little corner of west London, with increased use of the local waterways and initiatives such as Cultivate London (an innovative urban farm, which has been on site since works first commenced), really adding to the sense of community that is building here.

"It was always the intention to have a number of architects design the different phases to ensure architectural diversity and it’s important to us that we continue to liaise closely with the local community as the development evolves. We are very excited about the fresh perspective Mæ Architects will bring."

Alex Ely, partner at Mæ Architects, added: "We've designed a scheme that is architecturally distinct whilst being of its place. Our design takes its cues from the waterways and its wharf architecture as well as drawing on characteristics of the nearby conservation area. We are excited about now taking it forward to construction and adding our bit to this great development."

ISIS Waterside Regeneration is jointly owned by the Canal & River Trust and MUSE Developments, and 50 per cent of its returns are re-invested by the former to maintain and enhance the UK's waterways.
