THE Chronicle has again joined forces with The Centre, Feltham, to seek out the town’s community heroes.

Citizen of the Year 2012 awards, launched this week, are designed to recognise kind-hearted members of the community who go out of their way to help others in times of need or crisis.

Lorraine Eggleton, manager of The Centre, which runs the awards in association with the Chronicle, said: “As in previous years we want to reward and recognise those amazing members of the community, who go that extra mile to help others.

“The awards are open to anyone in the Feltham area. They don’t have to be well-known or involved in major events, just as long as their efforts benefit those in need.

“If you know someone who helps others and expects nothing in return, then nominate them for the chance to be 2012’s Citizen, or Young Citizen of the Year.”

The scheme runs all year with the awards presented in December. Last year’s winners were 13-year-old Shawnee Nash, of Watermill Way, and Harry Irwin, then 86, of Shaftesbury Avenue. Miss Nash, the recipient of the Young Citizen of the Year Award, was nominated by eight people for her help at Feltham Arts Association.

Mr Irwin was Citizen of the Year for his work collecting money for the Salvation Army, making sets for amateur theatre groups and driving the less mobile to and from church.

Also, dozens more were given certificates for their efforts to help others.

The two winners will receive £500 to give to a charity of their choice, and their name will be engraved on the Citizen of the Year plaque installed in the community building at The Centre. Entries will be accepted all year and all nominators and their friends and families will be invited to the awards presentation, which will be in The Centre’s community room.
