SIX dedicated leaders in the Harrow and Wealdstone Scout District have been honoured for their long and distinguished service.

The award of the Silver Acorn has been presented to Lorraine Whitlum of the 19th Harrow Group; Richard Bong, 20th Harrow; Ivor Gould 8/12th Harrow; Neil Armstrong, 23rd Harrow; and Peter Oxenham, 9th Roxeth.

The highest award, the Silver Wolf, was awarded to Rex Hallett, who was Scout Leader of the 23rd Harrow for 40 years and is currently an Honorary Scout District Adviser.

This award has only been awarded to leaders in the Harrow and Wealdstone District three times since 1955.

Mr Hallet, 74, of Borrowdale Avenue, Harrow, has been involved with the scouts for 66 years. He said: "I was absolutely delighted when I found out I had won the award. I joined cubs when I was eight and worked up to become a scout. I became a leader in 1954 and was a leader for 40 years and I am still actively involved.

"It is a great hobby for young people to join. They are taught how to be independent and have a go at interesting activities. It can be really exciting."
