CHILDREN at Pinner Park First School nursery will literally reap what they got to sow during a sun-drenched gardening workshop.

They bought vegetable seeds from Wyevale Garden Centre, in Headstone Lane,Harrow,on Wednesday last week and planted them the following morning in pots, hanging baskets and raised beds at the nursery.

Twenty-six three-to-four-year-olds from the morning session and the same number from the afternoon session will continue to watch and water the crops as they grow.

Eileen Harper, nursery manager at the school in Melbourne Avenue,Pinner, said: "They planted carrots, beetroot, lettuce and peppers and in the summer we'll pick them to make salads. We teach them about where food comes from and the importance of a healthy diet. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The weather was beautiful and we had a lot of support from our parents."

Gardening does not stop at home, though, because each child has been given a potted sunflower to look after in the coming months.
