A YOUNG carer has been praised by a local MP Mary Macleod for caring for his disabled sister and 'making Brentford a better place'.

Barry Smart, 14, a pupil at Isleworth and Syon School in Ridgeway Road met the Brentford and Isleworth MP on Thursday (March 1). He was given a Diana Courageous Citizen Award last year and Ms Macleod said she was inspired to meet him.

Barry, who lives in Brentford, balances his school work with helping his mum care for his sister who has cerebral palsy and other medical conditions. Along with helping her with her day-to-day care he also cooks for her.

When at school Barry looks forward to food technology so he can practise cooking and in his free time likes to fish.

Angela Cobden, assistant headteacher said: “We are delighted that Mary Macleod has taken the time out of her busy schedule to come and visit Barry and see his commitment to our school first hand.

"Barry’s exceptional qualities are patience, loyalty, compassion, empathy and determination to succeed. These qualities enable him to support his sister and other students without concern for his own needs.”

Mary Macleod said: “I was delighted to hear that Barry’s hard work both at home and in the local community has been recognised through this the prestigious Diana Award.

"His dedication to his sister and the local community is inspiring. It is such a pleasure to meet young people like Barry who are committed to making Brentford a better place.”
