HEATHROW Primary School is remaining closed today (Wed) following a fire at a wood chip recycling plant in nearby Harmondsworth.

The fire began on Tuesday at 3.40am on land ar the rear of Sipson Road and Holloway Lane.

Firefighters were still working late yesterday afternoon to extinguish deep seated pockets of the fire, even though the main blaze had earlier been brought under control. Today (Wed) they remain at the site continuing to monitor it for safety.

Heathrow Primary School in Harmondsworth Lane was closed on safety advice yesterday because of the risk of smoke drifting over, and it remains closed today.

Hillingdon Council have backed advice from the Health Protection Agency given to residents living nearby:

Motorists who have to travel through the smoke should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.

Residents in areas affected by the smoke should stay indoors and keep their doors and windows closed.

Some of the substances present in smoke can irritate the lining of the air passages, the skin and the eyes.

If symptoms occur, people should seek medical advice or call NHS Direct 0845 4647.
